Installation of UK Adapter Style Bearing Units
Adapter units, consisting of an adapter sleeve, locknut, and washer, are suitable for applications exposed to heavy vibration and impact.
Correct installation is essential. If the locknut is not tightened sufficiently, the sleeve may loosen, causing slippage and wear on the shaft or bearing. If the locknut is over-tightened, the inner ring of the bearing can expand, reducing internal ball clearance, which may result in excessive heat and premature failure.
Follow the installation steps below:
1. Inspect the components
Check that the base is rigid, the mounting surface is flat, and the shaft meets the required tolerance. Inspect the shaft for bends, burrs, or other defects.
2. Mount the adapter sleeve
Slide the adapter sleeve onto the shaft. If it feels too tight, insert a screwdriver into the sleeve slot and gently expand it.
3. Position the bearing unit
Slide the bearing unit over the shaft and onto the adapter sleeve. Place a cylindrical reinforcing ring against the inner ring on the front side of the bearing. Seat the sleeve by lightly tapping around the back side of the sleeve.
4. Install the lock washer and locknut
Fit the lock washer so that its tab engages with the sleeve slot. With the tapered side facing the bearing, thread the locknut onto the sleeve and tighten it by hand.
5. Align and secure the unit
Align the bearing unit to the specified position on the base. Fix it in place using washers and bolts.
6. Tighten the locknut
Use a calibrated torque wrench to tighten the locknut to the recommended torque values shown in the table below.
7. Adjustment for pillow block housings
Loosen the mounting bolts and move the unit axially while rotating the shaft by hand. Then re-tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
8. Alignment for flange block housings
Carefully align the unit in the correct axial position relative to the shaft before completing installation.
9. Secure the locknut
Bend one tab of the washer into one of the slots on the locknut to lock it securely.
